For twelve days prior to the November full moon Pushkar is the venue for the Pushkar Fair, the largest camel fair in the world. A breathtaking scene to unfold on the normally silent dunes west of the town. Villagers from all over Rajasthan converge to camp out in the open and buy and sell camels. Horses and cattle are traded too, as well as pots, pans, jewellery, food, saris and dhotis. The women come in their exotic finery to enjoy the delights of the fair, bathe in the Holy Pushkar Lake, make offerings and to worship. The fair attracts thousands of people and is overwhelming in its magnitude and visual impact.
